About The Practical Philo
Stoicism, taken seriously and what that actually means.
The Practical Philo is a YouTube channel and a small library of writing about applied Stoicism, the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus, read closely and put to use. The premise is in the name: practical philosophy, not philosophy as decoration.
Why it exists
Search “Stoicism” and you’ll drown in the same thing: motivational quotes over gym footage, “stoic mindset” as a synonym for going hard, ancient wisdom flattened into a caption. The serious version Marcus as a working decision-maker, Memento Mori as a real practice, Seneca as the brilliant hypocrite worth arguing with, has quietly gone missing. This is an attempt to put it back.
What you can expect
- Accuracy first. Claims are checked, sources are named, and where the history is uncertain, we say so.
- Application over aphorism. Every idea comes with something to actually do with it.
- A calm, contemplative tone. No hype, no hustle, no shouting.
- Criticism welcome. We’ll happily say where popular Stoicism and the Stoics themselves, got it wrong.
Who it’s for
For the reader who has already kept the journal and read the quotes, and wants something that holds when life is genuinely hard. If you’ve ever felt that most “Stoicism” content is a marketing slogan, you’re who this is for.
Who’s behind it
The Practical Philo is an independent project, faceless on purpose. The point isn’t a personality; it’s the ideas, taken at their word. No course funnel, no #grindset, no guru. Just careful work, published in the open.
